ABCs of Gait and Running Gait Analysis
Richard Souza, PhD - University of California - San Francisco

Gait analysis can be a valuable tool to understand the role joint loading in the OA process. While many research labs use 3D systems that provide measurement accuracy to within 1 degree of angular rotation at the hip knee or ankle, many key observations can be made without such technology. This session will cover the basic structure of an observational gait analysis, using simple 2D video. The session will take the next step to evaluate running biomechanics. As more and more persons develop knee and hip OA, the challenge of maintaining an active lifestyle in the face of the disease becomes a challenging clinical problem. Emerging evidence in running biomechanics as it relates to joint loads and potential for contributing to the disease process will be discussed. By the end of the session, participants should have a full understanding of the phases of gait, key gait features that may contribute to knee or hip OA, running biomechanics form and common patterns associated with injury.
